Emmys 2013' Self-Mocking Humor Doesn’t Rescue A Uninteresting Show!

emmys-2013
Emmys always seem that they’d be the easiest
We don’t ask a lot of the Primetime Emmy Prizes. Nobody ever gets one of them three-hour statuette dispensaries fully right, but the Emmys always seem that they’d be the easiest of all of the awards shows to pull off - mostly because the likelihood of culturally disruptive twerking is extremely, very low, which means the Emmys are the awards show no just one ever remembers 18 hrs later.

So what happened Weekend night during CBS’s anemic and quite often awkward Emmys telecast, published by Neil Patrick Harris? (Or allow me to put it another method: I had to next-day 'Breaking Bad'for this kind of?)

Everyone’s favorite messed-up meth saga did finally win the best episode award, so the night wasn’t a total wash, but all those highfalutin theses regarding the Netflix-y future of television never materialize. Claire Danes won cause actress (drama) for Showtime’s 'Homeland'for the second year in a row, and, inexplicably, Jeff Daniels earned lead actor (drama) for HBO’s 'The Newsroom. ha

'Modern Family'won best humor series for what might appear to be the squillionth time, but it is just the fourth. HBO’s Washington-based humor 'Veep'took two acting honours - Tony Hale for promoting actor, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus intended for lead actress the second straight year. And Anna - Gunn won for promoting actress (drama) for the AMC’s 'Breaking Bad. '

That is most on the news, now for this snooze, starting with a tiresome opening sketch that presented Harris locking himself in a multi-screen chamber to binge the whole 2012-13 season of every television show inside of minutes.

Once onstage, Harris had been joined by former Emmys hosts (Jimmy Kimmel, Jane Lynch, Jimmy Fallon in addition to Conan O’Brien), who needled him in among those tiresome meta-routines in which all the comedy is directed at the existence of the reveal, in real time. This joke just got staler as soon as an unamused Kevin Spacey, this star of Netflix’s hit 'House of Cards, 'turned in addition to addressed the camera while House Majority Whip Francis Underwood, his fictional character on the show.

Later, Harris’s 'How I Attained Your Mother'co-stars confronted him within an intervention for 'EHD'(excessive web hosting disorder), treatable only at the 'Ryan Seacrest Center for Excessive Hosting. '

Halfway over the evening, Harris finally brought out the jaunty song-and-dance routines, the main symptom associated with his EHD, with a number called 'The Number down the middle of the Show. '(Sample lyric: 'The Emmy Awards are 3 hours long / Now there’s 3 minutes less to look. ') One can’t imagine a flashier approach to demonstrate that Hollywood’s awards-show writers desperately need to think of a way to explain to jokes that aren’t about telling jokes; to stage a show that’s not simply about the show.

The very best line of the evening came very early on from Merritt Wever, who seemed so surprised at winning the supporting actress Emmy for any comedy show ('Nurse Jackie') that she went with the woman flusteredness and said: 'I gotta proceed, bye. '

The rest of us (well, some of us) gotta remain, alas, in a listless position about the couch while the Emmys poked along as flatly as it can be. The banter had no flair for comedy. This tributes - including small monologues from Robin Williams, Michael J. Fox, Rob Reiner and Jane Lynch (honoring this recent deaths of amusing actor Jonathan Winters, 'All inside the Family’s'Jean Stapleton, producer Gary David Goldberg and 'Glee’s'Cory Monteith) from time to time seemed stiff and, the majority of curiously, clip-less.
