The March On Washington was planned more than a bowl of chili and the restaurant was on the list of only places to remain open through the riots that followed Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination in_ 1968.

Virginia Ali said, 'I remember people getting into the Chili Bowl, having something to eat before going to the march_ I recall the enthusiasm of many people about continuing to fall there to march for identical rights and jobs'.
